  1. The Dream

From the recording The Distance Between Dreams

Lyrics

THE DREAM

You dreamed of a knight in a helmet of steel;
You imagined his lance and how it would feel
To be laid on his shield, to be pierced on his tower,
To be crushed by his needy mechanical power.

You dreamed of a lady mysteriously veiled
Whose passion was pure, whose love never failed
To absolve and enflame you and make you feel whole
In your loverless body and unlovely soul.

Now beauty surrounds you, and music and light,
The bloom and the blossom, the swallow in flight.
You call for your lover - your lover is there
With your name on his lips and your scent in her hair.

But deep in your heart, you believe that it’s true
There is no love in this world for you;
That nothing is what nothing seems
And the day’s the distance between dreams.

As darkness gives way, your dreams lose their shape.
You try to hold on but your lover escapes.
Your knight rides away as the light closes in,
There’s an infinite ache where your lady has been.

And you sense a familiar chill in your soul.
It stalks through your sleep and then it takes hold.
It’s a yearning and freezing and desolate love;
It penetrates deep but it’s never enough.

Perhaps there’s hope, there may be grace
There’s inner peace and outer space.
For nothing is what nothing seems
The day’s the distance between dreams.
